A New Roof for My Mom

When my mom decided to have a new roof put on her house, I was surprised with the price she told me she was quoted. I don’t know much about roofing. Actually, I don’t know anything at all about it. Still, I knew that no reputable and professional roofing contractor in Brooklyn would charge such a low price. When I had her show me the estimate, I understood why it was so low. She had not gotten the estimate from a professional roofing company at all. Instead, it was just a handwritten estimate on a piece of paper, and it was just signed with a person’s name rather than a company name.

When I asked my mom how she found this person, she said that she had answered an ad in the paper for a roofer. I did not want her pay money to someone who possibly did not have the training or expertise to give her the roof that she wanted. I was not able to sway her until I told her that this person was not even insured. I knew that because I had called him myself, and he was just a handyman looking for work.

When she realized that if he got hurt on her roof, she would be responsible, her tune changed. She asked me to find her a good roofing company that is insured and licensed, and she asked that I try to keep the cost low as well. That is just a given, because I know she is on a fixed income. When I showed her an estimate from a reputable roofing company, she was happy to have them do the work since they assured her they would use only quality materials. She got her new roof, and I got peace of mind knowing it was done properly.
